ABRAHAM: LESSON 3 ANSWERS

Lesson 3. 


1. Why did Sarah ask Abraham to send Hagar and Ishmael away? (After 
you answer this question, read Galatians Chapter 4, verses 23 – 31) 

In the flesh, Sarah was overwhelmed with jealously. At a deeper 
level, it is surmised that the works of the flesh and the promises 
of God cannot co-exist.

2. Why did it grieve Abraham to send Ishmael away? (Think of the 
things in your life you reluctantly parted with, even though it was 
for the best) 

It is hard to depart with the flesh.

3. When Isaac asked Abraham, "…where is the lamb for the burnt 
offering?" what was Abraham's reply? (After you answer this 
question, refer to John 1:29, 36 for further study) 

God will provide 
himself a lamb for a burnt offering. 

4. Genesis 22:10 clearly implies that Abraham placed God first in 
all things. Is there a limit to what you are willing to sacrifice 
in the service of God? (This question is presented more for thought 
than discussion. As we internally explore this question, I believe 
we will better understand our present relationship with our Lord.)

5. What is Genesis 22:18 talking about, and how does it apply to 
the Gentiles (You and I)? 

This passage of scripture is pointing to 
Jesus, who is the salvation for the entire world.

6. Where is Sarah buried? 

The tomb of the patriarchs. (Cave of Machpelah)

7. What is Isaac's wife's name? How was she identified as the 
right person for him to marry? 

Rebekah. It was shown to Abraham that the woman who 
treated his servant and his camel with kindness would be the one.

8. Who did Abraham marry after the death of Sarah? How many sons 
did they have? 

Abraham married Keturah, his concubine, and they had six sons 
together.

9. When Abraham died, who buried him? 

Isaac and Ishmael.

10. How many sons did Ishmael have? Name them. Ishmael had twelve 
sons as promised by God when he was still a child. 

Nebajoth, Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, Mishma, Dumah, Massa, Hadar, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, 
and Kedemah.  Refer back to Genesis 17:20.


Bonus question: What does El Elyon mean? The most high God.
